An independent music-culture apparel study combining archival-style imagery, dimensional typography, and early-2000s bootleg aesthetics into a contemporary graphic tee.

NIPSEY is an independent apparel concept exploring the visual language of music tribute merchandise through a contemporary streetwear lens.
The graphic combines layered portraiture, bold dimensional typography, saturated blue tones, and nostalgic bootleg-shirt aesthetics to create a piece that feels rooted in hip-hop merchandise culture while remaining wearable as a modern graphic tee.
Music merchandise often works because it represents more than the artist—it gives an audience a physical connection to the culture, memories, and identity surrounding the music.
For this independent study, I wanted to explore the exaggerated visual language associated with vintage concert and memorial tees while refining it into a more intentional apparel composition. Multiple images were layered around a dominant portrait, while metallic-style typography and a concentrated blue palette establish the nostalgic bootleg character of the piece.
The final artwork was designed around the proportions of an actual garment rather than as a standalone poster. Scale, negative space, image hierarchy, and the relationship between the upper and lower typography were considered specifically for chest placement and readability when worn.
The result is a graphic that deliberately embraces the excess of classic music merchandise while controlling the composition enough to function as a contemporary apparel piece.
